What do you get when you combine three park wardens, stories of life-risking rescues, stunning photographs, and great music?
An evening with the musical group, The Wardens and a glimpse behind the warden’s hat (or park ranger’s hat if you live in the U.S.).
The wardens are a musical trio made up of actual park warden staff. Bradley Bischoff joined Parks Canada’s warden service in 1981. Scott Ward started in 1969 and retired in 2005. Ray Schmidt, a warden dispatcher and new media specialist for Parks Canada cofounded the group with Scott.
The Wardens intersperse their music with stories and photographs of life as a “government cowboy”. Songs such as “What’s on Warden TV?”, “The Silly Question Song” and “Adventure Before Dementia” provide a glimpse behind the uniform into the life and hazards of park wardens. Patrolling the backcountry with only a horse for company and risking their lives to rescue park visitors is routine for these courageous men and women.
As a teenager I wished to be a park ranger. After listening to The Wardens I had a much better idea of what a day in their boots was like, and I was glad I chose accounting instead! Regardless, this is innovative combination of interpretation, storytelling and entertainment had me applauding the performance and the concept.
Many travelers want to try on other people’s lives, even if only for a few hours, and The Wardens gave me a chance to do that from the comfort of a lodge chair with a chilled glass of wine. The risk was minimal and the view was divine!
