I help people reinvent their business and lives with adventure. It sounds fun but in reality change is hard, even ‘fun’ changes. It’s easier to stay in the same place where you have – or feel like you have – control. And sometimes, great change can seem impossible. When the media reports yet another species is fighting for space on the planet, it is easy to despair.
But a great way to find inspiration for your reinventure is to look above daily struggles and focus on what happens when you accumulate a bunch of daily victories. In the 1980s when Pacific Whale Foundation founder, Greg Kaufman started studying humpback whales in the Hawaiian Islands, whales were so rare it was too expensive to search for them by boat!
Instead, Greg would climb to a viewpoint over the ocean, scan the waters with binoculars and when he saw a whale, hurry down to his boat and head in the direction of the whale. Fortunately, lots of people took little steps to save whales. They wrote letters and protested, and whaling was significantly reduced. In 1992 Congress established the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary.
In the length of time it takes to pay off a house mortgage, northern humpback whale populations have rebounded and the waters around Maui resemble whale soup when thousands of whales come to mate and give birth. You could be forgiven for thinking they are celebrating their reinvention success as they leap, slap, mate and cavort in water.
Now Greg’s company takes over 300,000 people each year to see whales. And none of them have to climb a hill to do it! So when you are contemplating your next reinvention, do not think how far you have to go, trust that enough single steps taken together will accomplish great change!
