Going green is more than caring for the environment. It’s also about caring for communities. Auberge du Lac Taureau is proud of their efforts to decrease energy usage and waste but the most adorable part of their sustainability program is Toucan, a Golden Labrador puppy.
Innkeepers and dog keepers
Toucan is in training to be a service dog for the MIRA Foundation who provides dogs for the blind and disabled. “Living at a hotel is great training for a service dog,” explains co-owner Bernard Hamel on the frequent contact the dog has with guests of different ages and personalities.
Toucan spends his nights at the home of a staff member and has days off like paid staff. When Toucan prowls the Auberge’s hallways and lounges, guests stop to pet him or take a picture of the four-legged ambassador.
Inspired by a life crisis
Hamel got involved with MIRA after selling a business and going through a nasty divorce over a decade ago. He devoted a year of his life to fundraising for MIRA, pulling in over half a million dollars. As a thank you the organization gave him a service dog – Salsa. That was thirteen years ago and while Salsa is nearing the end of her life, Hamel continues to support MIRA.
Get some puppy love
If you find yourself missing your dog – although with pet-friendly rooms and a beach for dogs Fido can also enjoy Auberge du Lac Taureau – you can get some doggie love by petting Toucan.
